Training has been one of the activities promoted most consistently by our organisation’s Board of Directors since its founding. The lack of regulated university training prior to 2002 made it necessary to organise different actions to provide training, ranging from master’s programmes in archivistics, seminars, courses, conferences, etc. as well as conventions and symposia focussing on specific issues:
Master’s programme in Archivistics
In response to the lack of any university degree in archivistics, in 1989 the Archivists Association of Catalonia, in conjunction with Catalan universities, inaugurated the first in a series of Master’s courses in archivistics. This university programme of post-graduate studies lasts 2 years (approximately 420 hours of classes plus a research project) and provides archivists with overall training in archivistics, which is completed with work on a research project.
The Escola Superior d’Arxivística i Gestió de Documents - ESAGED (School of Archival and Records Management), linked to the Autonomous University of Barcelona and in collaboration the AAC, offers an Advanced Degree in Archivistics and Records Management, with the objective of training professionals to a high level of expertise in the management of historical and administrative documents in a context in which technological innovation and quality of service are key factors.
Congress of Catalan Archivists
Every two years, the Archivists Association of Catalonia organises the Congress of Catalan Archivists, for discussion and debate on a specific issue of professional interest to the sector. With the aim of promoting the updating of concepts and the ongoing renewal of the principles of archivistics, these seminars always involve the participation of recognised archivists from other countries and experts specialising in the subject under debate.
In the years when an Archivistics Symposium is not held, a study and debate session is offered on a specific area of archivistics.
Antoni Varès Symposium on Image and Research
In conjunction with the Girona Town Council’s Image Research and Dissemination Centre (CRDI), the Archivists Association of Catalonia organises the Symposium on Image and Research. This Symposium has been held every second year in Girona since 1990 and has become a point of reference for professionals linked to the world of photography and images in general. In addition, a supplementary practical workshop is held on a specific aspect of the documentary treatment of collections of photographs and other graphic documents.
Conferences, seminars and debate forums
The Archivists Association of Catalonia regularly organises seminars, conferences, discussions and other types of sessions on issues of interest to professionals in the sector.
Within the framework of the programme of visits created by the Section of Professional Associations of the International Council on Archives, members have the opportunity to channel their requests for professional visits to archives around the world.
